PulpFiction--

So the new release came out yesterday, and I downloaded it 30 minutes ago, so this is all very much first impressions, and as is the spool's tradition, probably horribly unfair.

(PulpFiction is the new Mac RSS reader, in case you don't follow these things.)

First off, it didn't import my NNW subscriptions with any idea of groups. This is hard, but Shrook manages it.

Secondly, selecting my 300-odd feeds and selecting "Filterize" (hello, welcome to the new mangled language!) locked up PF with a spinning pizza of death for a good ten minutes, before I got bored and killed it.

Thirdly, going to the inbox, then a filter/folder/thing, then back to the inbox, fails to redisplay the 3335 (it says) new items that I have.

Frankly, even if it did show them, I have no idea how I'm meant to get through 3000 items in any sane manner.

At least in NNW you can move between feeds easily. In PF you have to create a bunch of filters, which you can't navigate through with (obvious) keys.

Maybe I'm just not ready for the brave new paradigm of "all your news in your inbox", just like the way I still use Eudora with a buttload of filters rather than gibbering spunkily about using Apple Mail or Gmail.

In any case, if I do ever care to read newsfeeds again, it'll be back in the bosom of NNW.

Oh yes, just so Ranchero don't get away without pain: thanks a fucking bundle for setting the "the Lite version has no AppleScript support" concept going. Bastard.

I've given up and thrown it away. This is probably harsh, but I don't see what benefits it gives me, and I don't have the time and inclination to learn.

Or, as they say on Usenet, * plonk *.
