As expected, it's a Google search, for your desktop. Or laptop.
So far it's indexed a bit of my email, but it's handling it really quite well.
Anyway, I'm sure we'll see an awful lot about this in the next day or two.
It integrates suprisingly tightly with Google's web search. I can see a few alarm bells ringing about sending of data, although I suspect it's actually splicing the HTML locally.
In fact, the documentation says that's exactly what happens.
Google Desktop Search also intercepts www.google.com's results page before you can see it, changes it to include the Google Desktop Search results, and then lets your web browser show it to you.
