First up, Edd rips the XML spec to shreds.
I think the category format is a side-effect of XML outlining sucking, but I fear I don't know enough. I'd like to know how he'd suggest defining a heirarchy mroe nicely, though.
As to the "Learn More" link, the itms: and itmss: protocols are meant to be handled by iTunes, which (assuming Edd is running Linux today) won't work at all. As it is, that link isn't working for me either (it's generating a server error): too many people trying to suggest podcasts for inclusion, perhaps?
Ah! Playing around within the Music Store's Podcast section, I can find an official link to the previously mentioned Chapter Tool. In the interests of working around Apple's boneheadedness, this is the RTF that mirrors the content.
Secondly, the BBC have a news story on the new version.
Apple plans to police which podcasts make it into the directory of shows available via its iTunes program.
Not only is this putting it rather strongly (how is it meant to start the directory? build a search engine just for podcasts?), it's also followed later on with quotes from an Apple spokesman:
"We've tried to include as many as possible," said Mr Ng, adding that iTunes has a system for people to submit their podcasts to be included in the directory.
submissions would go through an editorial process to make sure there were no copyright issues or that they did not include objectionable content
None of that looks particularly objectionable to me, and anyway, you can always subscribe to a podcast even if Apple don't list it.
Finally, they mention this:
A software update for the click-wheel iPods and the iPod minis will offer a podcast menu, including bookmarking and the ability to show podcast artwork.
Just a note that iTunes displayed the podcast pane fine in the iPod preferences for me, and that was on an old version of the firmware (1.4) on a touch-wheel (2G) iPod.
Wow, I'm really wittering about this. Time to shut up, I think.
We hate you all. Yes, especially you. Sod off and DIE
