Pressing 'delete' when you have tracks selected in a smart playlist doesn't do anything (not even a warning beep).
If you really want to delete the track from the music library, though, you can press option and delete to remove it.
You'll get a warning which you can permanently dismiss.
(If you want to implement one of those yourself in Cocoa, Dan Wood has an example using a trampoline object, although consensus around here seems to be that they're annoying.)
Found when flicking through Hacking Mac OS X Tiger, which I might pick up just for the Dock icon badging code example.
