A reasonably good look at the business and political challenges facing Apple if they want to ship a "proper" "media center".


 

As so often, though, it glosses over the technical problems:


 

It "records" TV shows from cable, satellite, antennae, or a combination thereof, for the purpose of playback later

 

Yes, and as 2lmc tire of saying, recording from cable is not the same as recording from satellite, which is not the same as recording from antenna (analogue free to air).


 

That's why Elgato's EyeTV has to present a "where do you live" and "how do you receive TV" before showing you its products.


 

Maybe instead of this noise about Apple buying Adobe, people should be looking at another short-named company starting with a vowel...

Anyway, in the UK the "souped up DTT box with HDD" market is going to get very crowded, very quickly


 

BT will be launches theirs soon, as will others


 

Anyway, if you're launching that kind of shiny product, you're really looking at supporting HD


 

And that's basically a Sky gig. (although the BBC services will be in the clear)
