Steve Jobs' "Thoughts on Music"

Predictably, this big piece about DRM and the iTunes music store (ecosystem?) is doing the rounds, and it's only been posted for a couple of hours.

The thrust of it seems to be "Don't blame Apple for the DRM, it's the big four music companies! Go after them!"

"Much of the concern over DRM systems has arisen in European countries. Perhaps those unhappy with the current situation should redirect their energies towards persuading the music companies to sell their music DRM-free. For Europeans, two and a half of the big four music companies are located right in their backyard"

jerakeen:

bah, it's demonstrably bullshit

as evidenced by those people who want to sell their music on the ITMS, but _don't_ want the drm

They're not given the choice.

The greatest trick Apple pulled was to build a market where lock-in is mandated, but convince the world that this was something they did reluctantly, at the behest of the villainous recording industry.

aah, there we are. I like people who actually bother to find the thing I was thinking of, so I don't have to.

Bah, so many people have weighed in on this I'm feeling disgustingly mainstream now.

blech:

Ew, what's with the UUID in the middle one?

I did like the discussion on video in Gruber's piece.

jerakeen:

Roughlydrafted urls are nasty. And he puts images throughout all his articles linking to other relevant articles he's written, but they've got unreadable urls and no tooltips, so it's more of a lottery of interestingness than actual hyperlinking.

blech:

He needs Snap previews!

I'm sorry. I'll go and sit in a corner setting up cookies across browsers now.

jerakeen:

Having said that, we're currently posting to http://2lmc.org/spool/id/5525. Not exactly pretty.

At least it fits in 80 characters.
