BBC on "new" London telephone number

posted on 2004/07/13 12:41

The BBC seems to think that London's getting a new area code, 0203.

Of course, this is complete shit.

The:

It's 020<space>3

blech:

The London area code is 020, as The has just said.

The:

just a new allocation. This should confuse people no end

blech:

All this means is that new London numbers will start with 3, instead of 7 or 8, as they have up until now.

It shouldn't confuse people, but then Ofcom really handled area code allocations badly through the 90s, so people think 0207 is an area code.

The:

There wasn't a serious "LOOK YOUR MORONS, THE LONDON CODE IS JUST 020"

Which was a campaign needed to happen

blech:

True.

I make the point occasionally (especially when people are about to print business cards), but it's not something that most people seem to know.

The lack of a standard UK number length, let alone a standard area code length, doesn't help.

Prefixes can be three digits or five (020 vs 01787), and numbers can vary in length too.

Sigh.

The:

but they add up to the same thing...

Makes sense to me. but then i like netmasks

blech:

There are plenty of things to complain about with Ofcom, but a "new London code", which is no such thing, isn't one of them.

O2's business area ads ("you can choose 0207 and 0208") don't help either.

The:

Which Ofcom are "looking into" supposedly

blech:

You might like to read Ofcom's press release, rather than the BBC's dumbed-down nonsense.
